Women’s Legal Aid Centre (WLAC)
Organization Type: Service Provider
WLAC is unique pro-gender rights organization in many ways. Firstly, WLAC is also the organization in Tanzania which offers legal aid assistance to the children in conflict with law under its juvenile justice initiative. Secondly, it is the only legal aid service provider (LAP) in Tanzania which provides legal aid services directly to the refugees in the Tanzanian based in refugee camps. Thirdly, WLAC is the only LAP which advocates for refugees’ rights through various interventions (directly in the refugees’ camps) in Tanzania.
Fourthly, it is the only or rather an inventor of the alternative access to justice approaches by introducing paralegal (community-based legal aid services) model, free-toll or hotline mobile phone services, and mobile legal aid scheme for hard-to-reach areas in Tanzania. Fifthly, it is the only LAP with a higher percentage of clients(women and children) who are directly presented by practicing lawyers in a court of law; and sixthly, its recently introduced field placement of lawyers into selected paralegal units would, again, cause other LAPs to follow the threads of its innovations as it has been a case.
