This report identifies the drivers of tenure risk to land-based investment from the perspective of the private sector. This report then allows investors and operators to benchmark their own performance relative to others and learn about best practices which they may not have tried yet.

This report is based on consultation with business operating across the African supply chain and shines a spotlight on the severity of tenure risk. Tenure risk is the risk of dispute between investors and local people over land or natural resource claims, and is endemic in emerging markets. This report shows that tenure disputes can create substantial financial losses in addition to the impacts on communities.

This paper investigates the real financial consequences of investing in land with disputed tenure rights. It demonstrates that companies which ignore the issue of land tenure expose themselves to substantial, and in some cases extreme, risks.

This analysis describes the overarching pattern of conflict between companies and local communities in emerging and frontier market concessions. Identifying those patterns is the first step to establishing best practices for managing the risk.

This review of the available evidence on women’s land and property rights is aimed at identifying opportunities and needs for additional research. It is based on a review of online literature and academic databases and discussions with global and national actors—practitioners, researchers, and activists.
